I spent a wonderful afternoon/overnight in the 1000 Islands area outside of Kingston, ON.
We spent the day at a private cottage and enjoyed boating/kayaking, etc. on the St. Lawrence, the water was great, the privacy of the islands outstanding and a real pleasure. With the residences, in large part, only accessible by boat we had a great trip across the river to our own private getaway.
The boating rules in and around the cottage area have prohibited wake zones, which ensure a safe and worry free environment for water activities. In early June, the water could have been a bit warmer, but it lent itself well to Kayaking and boating.
For the evening, we slept at the Glen House Resort outside Gananoque. The rates were quite reasonable ($99/room) and they had a variety of set ups. If staying on your own be sure to request a 'full' room as some rooms stretch the length of the hotel while others are split half way. The furnishings themselves were nothing to be excited about, and the room was only moderately clean, but the amenities were apparent. Indoor/outdoor pools, paddle boats, kayaks, etc. and stay and play golf packages ensure you'll have a full day even while staying in a fairly rural area.
That said, I'd recommend renting a cottage to get the full experience of the 1000 Islands area.
