We stayed at Barcelo Colonial April 27th to May 3rd, 2008. It was amazing. The staff was pleasant and attentive to any concerns that we had, which were minimal .
Upon checking in we were taken to our room, on the ground level. We had requested a 2nd floor room, so we went to the front desk. Everything was changed within minutes with no problem at all, they were very accommodating. The rooms were great. Clean, spacious, comfortable and well kept. It was a little humid, but we just weren't running the air conditioner as much as we should have. The view from our room was great - we weren't expecting much as it was garden view, but the vegetation, etc. was well groomed and the view from the balcony was great.
The resort is wonderfully laid out. Despite being on a huge complex with 5 resorts we got orientated very quickly and were able to find out way around. The resort train was useful and good way to see all the other complexes, etc.
The beach was well kept, and beautiful. Miles of beach meant that everyone was spread out pretty well, it was never too crowded. A quick walk to the pier, water sports, etc. The beach was clean, sand was white, water beautiful. Great snorkeling opportunities as well. Although, for the most part, the water was all sand underneath there were a few reef areas, etc. that had great deposits of fish. I'm an amateur snorkeler at best, but I loved it here.
The pools, etc. were also great. Swim up bars were never too busy and the pools were awesome. A lot of care taken to layout etc. and there were always chairs, hammocks and the like available.
The dining, at both the buffet and outdoor snack shops were great. I had neglected to bring long pants, or shoes so I had a hard time with reservations at the a la carte. The managers were accommodating enough that we could have worked something out, but the food at the buffet didn't get old so we weren't worried about it. There were different themes each night, and always something for everyone.
So, great service, great food, great room, great time. I'd highly recommend Barcelo Maya to anyone traveling to the Mayan Riviera.
